Before driving back to the hotel in Missouri we stop by a Archeological Site that was getting help from the National Park Service. There are archeologists working on a dig from the 1908 Springfield Race Riot. They found the neighborhoods of where some of the black people homes were destroyed. They found different artifacts in the basement areas. They have learned about some of the people that live in that area.
So there might be a new park in the future.
What I remember this site is near some railroad tracks. There are signs that have information about what they have found. We did talk to someone there that was helping out with the dig.
Here is a article about the dig on the NPS website: Illinois: 1908 Springfield Race Riot Archaeological Site (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)
That sounds very interesting! History undercover.
